A perfect way to begin
The cycle route begins where the River Ahr flows into the Rhine, separating Sinzig from the Kripp district of Remagen. Breaking out of Sinzig, a town once popular with the Holy Roman Emperor, Barbarossa, you pass the small spa village of Bad Bodendorf on your way to Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler. Another spa resort, the town is renowned for its springs, its capacity to revitalise and its sheer exuberance. But that's not all. The cafés, restaurants and vineyards in the surrounding region are some of the finest in the world, and rival the popularity of the casino and the Symphony of the Senses spa centre.

Ahrweiler, the older part of the town, is also the gateway to the region where Germany's most distinguished red wines are made. The onward route through the rugged Ahr valley with its steep vineyard slopes shows just how much work goes into making the wine. As you head up into the hills towards Altenahr, you pass by homely villages such as Walporzheim, Rech, Dernau and Mayschoss. Along the way, a succession of snug little wine taverns beckon you to stop and rest your legs.

Those who want to accompany the river all the way to its source can either press ahead on the Ahr Cycle Route or follow the disused railway line. There is no cycle path yet between Schuld and Fuchshofen so this short section has to be traversed by road.

Terrain:

The Ahr Cycle Route runs on asphalt/surfaced cycle paths or back roads, some of which have a gentle gradient and in certain sections follow an old railway embankment. There is no path for approx. 5km between Schuld and Fuchshofen. Although there are plans to bridge the gap, the road is the only option for the time being. From Fuchshofen, the route continues on a newly laid cycle path to Blankenheim.

The Ahr follows a straight course in this stage, which is mirrored by the route as you complete a barely perceptible climb on mostly riverside paths.

A wonderful journey across bridges, through tunnels, on paths that head away from the Ahr and on those that runs along its banks. But always framed by scenery of incomparable beauty as you traverse the heart of the Ahr valley. There is still a 3km section where the road is your only option but plans are in progress to bridge the gap.

A stage that brings you closer to the Eifel region, partly along a disused railway line and partly through a broad meadow valley. Continues to the source of the river in Blankenheim (currently only on a country road, hence the longer distance).

Variety is the hallmark of the landscape in this stage: meadows alternate with woodland, deeply cut valleys give way to flat, open countryside, and pretty little villages such as Fuchshofen and Müsch beckon you from the wayside. Between Schuld and Fuchshofen you have to cycle for approx. 5km on a country road.

In this stage, you follow a newly laid path to Ahrdorf, Ahrhütte and finally Blankenheim where the Ahr river rises.

Rest your tired legs and get a good night's rest in the region's hotels and guesthouses or in holiday accommodation.
